  1. Sacreligion

From the recording Source Materials

Track 8: Sacreligion
“Sacreligion” is based on my experience going to Catholic school for nine years. Catholic
guilt had a significant hold over me during these formative years. I was told that I had to pray every
day and repent because I was an inherent sinner. Hearing these messages at such a young age had a
profound impact and made me doubt my morality. I also developed religious scrupulosity to some
extent. I wanted to be pretty raw with this song to reflect the vulnerability of it all. It has minimal
production, really just my voice, guitar, and some drums. I also wanted the song to be gentle and
beautiful, juxtaposing the darker lyrical content. I layer many rich harmonies over reverberant guitar creating an atmosphere of calm and serenity, in an ironic sense.

Lyrics

Track 8: Sacreligion

Verse 1:
First they taught her how to read
And then they taught her sin.
Repent first thing each morning,
Then take your daily vitamins.

And when she turned seven,
They draped the veils of white
A cheaply made disguise
Concealing centuries of vice

Pre-Chorus:
Don’t take this road to heaven,
It’s paved with bad intentions
And she got caught too young in unfortunate processions

Maybe leaving Eden
Is what's gonna set her free
But not before she tastes the fruit of scrupulosity

Chorus:
It's a sacreligion
That baptized her in gasoline
They claimed divine permission
Lit the match, ignored the scream

It's a sacrilegion
That drowned her in the holy water
Begged forgiveness from the father
It's a sacreligon

Verse 2:
And if the Lords a shepherd then
He treats the sheep like fools
Lamb of god protect them all
But feed them to the wolves

When she turned twelve
The started measuring the inches
Keep your skirt below the knees
Or you're a bad decision

Pre-chorus:
Don’t take this road to heaven,
It’s paved with bad intentions
And she got caught too young in its unfortunate processions

Maybe leaving Eden
Is what sets her free
But not before she tastes the fruit of scrupulosity

Chorus 2:
It's a sacreligion
That baptized her in gasoline
They claimed divine permission
Lit the match, ignored the scream

It's a sacrilegion
That drowned her in the holy water
Begged forgiveness from the father
It's a sacreligon

Bridge:
Hail Mary Full of Grace (amen)
Forgive me for my next mistakes
That I don't even know

Dusted ash across my face
Cleansing all the past mistakes
That I don't even know

Chorus 3:
It's a sacreligion
That baptized me in gasoline
They claimed divine permission
lit the match, ignored the scream

It's a sacrilegion
That drowned me in holy water
Begged forgiveness from the father
It's a sacreligon
